About the Grants
Through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act), the University of West Georgia has received federal funds to help students who have encountered a financial need related to the disruption of campus operations due to COVID-19 such as food, housing, course materials, technology, healthcare, and childcare expenses.
Students who have encountered a financial need related to the disruption of campus operations due to COVID-19 should utilize the UWG CARES Act application portal described below to apply for an emergency grant.
UWG CARES Act Funding is designed to assist currently enrolled students (both undergraduate and graduate) during the COVID-19 crisis in order for them to maintain their enrollment. It is designed to enable a student to meet a short-term financial hardship and is managed through UWG’s CARES Act Team.
Distribution and Award Process
The first phase of the available funds will be distributed to students who have demonstrated significant need as reported on their completed Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). No additional action is needed by the students who qualify for this first phase of distribution. If you are receiving these funds, you should receive an email once the funds are sent to your account.
Following this distribution, the UWG CARES Act Team will begin accepting applications for the second phase of the distribution that will be need-based awards for the remainder of the available funds. Funding amounts for the second phase will be determined based on the request, proof of need, and available funds. Most awards will not exceed $1,000 unless extenuating circumstances warrant a higher amount. These federal grants will not have to be repaid by the students who receive them. The application window for this phase of distribution is open now and will close Thursday, May 14, at 5 p.m.
Students who receive payment in the first phase of this distribution process described above are eligible to apply for the second phase.
Grant Criteria and Eligibility
UWG CARES Act Funding grants may be used to assist students with unexpected emergency expenses associated with COVID-19. Students will be asked to describe how they will utilize grant funds and how any unexpected expenses will impact their ability to remain enrolled at UWG.
Example expenses include: food expenses; technology; course materials; travel costs related to the death or illness of an immediate family member; unanticipated or extraordinary childcare expenses, including, but not limited to, formula and diapers; medical bill or medications; sudden emergency move or change in living conditions or to prevent homelessness; and safety needs (e.g., lock changes).
To be eligible for a CARES Act grant through the application:
- Students must be currently enrolled for the Spring 2020 semester.
- Students must be Title IV eligible. Eligibility requirements include having U.S. citizenship or being an eligible noncitizen and having a valid Social Security number.
- Students must have a completed Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on file. To check your status or complete a FAFSA, visit the Federal Student Aid website.
- Students must not have been enrolled in exclusively online classes or programs as of March 13, 2020.
To apply for a UWG CARES Act Funding grant, follow these three simple steps:
- Visit the UWG CARES Act Funding online portal and complete the application.
- Upload supporting documentation as needed. Supporting documentation must be relevant to the issues for which you are requesting. For example, if you are requesting funds to help with a utility bill, you must attach the utility bill.
- Submit the application. If you have attached documentation, please be patient when submitting the form.
Once you have submitted your application, you should expect a response within five (5) business days. If your application is approved, it will take up to five (5) business days for the distribution of funds. Applications will close Thursday, May 14, at 5 p.m.
The distribution of funds will take place via your BankMobile account or a paper check mailed to the student’s address as listed in BanWeb. All students can update their BankMobile refund selection method by visiting www.refundselection.com.
Any student who wishes to receive a paper check will experience a delay of eight to ten (8-10) business days in receiving their funds. If you wish to receive the funds via check, please email CARESAct@westga.edu.
