Message from the Interim President - Dr. Micheal Crafton
Hello, and welcome to the University of West Georgia! My name is Dr. Micheal Crafton, and I’m honored to serve as interim president of this wonderful regional comprehensive institution. I want to be the first one to tell you that the University of West Georgia is a university like no other. At UWG, we transform lives and change perceptions, constantly challenging ourselves to ask “what if” and “why not.” We refuse to accept that possibilities are limited.
We embrace diversity. We value community. We drive growth. We engage – as students, faculty and staff – and work collectively to be the best comprehensive university in America, sought after as the best place to work, learn, and succeed.
Here are the five things I want you to know about what we’re excited about at UWG this fall:
1. A continued commitment to experiential learning
At UWG, our students are already out in the “real world,” working with real companies and organizations, gaining invaluable experience while simultaneously earning their degree. With cutting-edge, experiential academic programs, students at UWG are challenged to acquire knowledge and skills outside the traditional academic setting. We provide opportunities for hands-on experience like internships, externships, co-ops, practicums, researching, volunteering, and job-shadowing that give our students the edge when applying for jobs or post-baccalaureate degrees.
2. Our education revolution will take a giant LEAP West
Our long-range goal at UWG is an education revolution, as a result of which undergraduate education will be an engaging, compelling, and comprehensive preparation for a truly meaningful and successful life in the real world. To that end, our LEAP West! project’s primary goal is explaining, promoting, and advocating for a broad-based, high-quality education as a foundation for entering the world of work, play, and civic responsibility.
3. UWG will maintain its marketplace relevancy
At UWG, we’re preparing the next generation of leaders, and we want all our graduates to be known for their scholarly acumen, values leadership and applied learning. That keeps us relevant in the higher education marketplace. Things are intentionally different here at UWG. The community our students experience here is unparalleled, and that’s the chief reason why many students choose UWG. They want a community that’s actually invested in their success. They find that here.
4. UWG Newnan grows in enrollment and offerings
More of a good thing is sometimes better – especially when comes to helping students realize their unlimited potential. That’s why UWG Newnan is pleased to announce a 40 percent increase in student enrollment over last year. Nearly 1,000 students are taking classes at UWG Newnan in its fourth year of operation on Jackson Street. Add another 127 high school Dual Enrollment students, and we’re certainly helping change many lives closer to home in Coweta County. A class sequencing initiative has allowed students the opportunity to stay in Newnan, where many of them live or work, meaning they can keep their jobs and stay closer to home to transform their lives.
5. A DAY and Homecoming 2019
This fall, we’ll see an unprecedented week of excitement on our campus as we celebrate Homecoming and host our annual “A DAY” giving campaign! “A DAY to Give West” – the largest giving campaign to UWG’s Annual Fund – will take place Thursday, Oct. 17. Visit giving.westga.edu to join the global community of West Georgians for an exciting day of giving back!
That same weekend, from Oct. 17-19, our campus will come alive with Homecoming events from a glow-in-the-dark parade to the “Starry Night” Presidential Scholarship Gala Oct. 19, which supports need-based scholarships that help our students reach for the stars. I’m also excited to host – and participate in! – the Presidential 5K on Friday, Oct. 18, the day before our big game with West Florida! To find out about all the events we have planned and to sign up for select events, visit westga.edu/homecoming.
As you can see, we have a lot to look forward to this semester. Let’s get started!
