IV.      General Statement of Department Condition

The MIT Department continues to be a technology leader in the College of Education and University. Faculty and staff are innovative, model effective technology practices, keep up to date in the field, mentor countless faculty members, and deliver a great number of technology training sessions at the local through international levels. The department delivers quality programs to media and instructional technology students and has an extensive publication and presentation record.

At the present time the MIT Department needs additional full time faculty to carry out its mission. In the past year three faculty members left the department due to professional and health related reasons, the former department chair, a full professor in instructional technology, and an assistant professor in school library media. As a result a number of adjuncts have been hired to teach the school library media classes. Faculty in the department has had to carry additional responsibilities as a result of this loss. This has included faculty members working with more advisees than a normal load, being assigned to multiple committees at the university and College of Education levels, and serving on an increased number of oral exam committees. This void in the department has caused increased work and stress on the entire department. Nevertheless faculty has continued to deliver quality classes, advance their professional development, and provide outstanding service to the department, College of Education, and University.

Student enrollments have increased the past year. This can be attributed to several factors such as the increasing need of School Library Media Specialists in the schools, a larger number of teachers becoming interested in developing their instructional technology skills, the department’s increased use of distance technology in all of its courses, faculty piloting and successfully using new and emerging types of distance technology in their classes such as Horizon Live and Epic Learning, and the superior teaching by faculty and staff in the department.  The department is currently interviewing candidates for the Media position. With the increased growth in the students enrolling in our courses, the department needs another position in the instructional technology area. To continue to serve as a leader in distance technology in the state, the department needs an improved telecommunication infrastructure and a more interactive distance delivery system to enable us to service students throughout the state who want our degree program.

V.      Departmental Achievements
  1. Percent of Students passing licensing, certification, or other accreditation examinations related to their chosen field – 94% passed Praxis II this past year.
