The Health & Wellness Center is a new 122,500 sq. ft instruction, convocation and sports facility that will be located on the main campus in Carrollton, Georgia. The Department of Physical Education & Recreation will call this building home. Groundbreaking for the new building was held on Thursday, August 16, 2007.
Faculty offices, seminar, conference and classrooms will be located off the left hand side of the main corridor. According to Matthew Clay, Project Advocate for the Health & Wellness Center, "This area will also include a state of the art Human Performance Lab for faculty and student research and teaching in such areas as Biomechanics, Exercise Physiology, and Motor Behavior."
The right hand side of the building is a large space that will be used for instruction of activity type classes. Five basketball courts are located on the ground floor that can be divided into separate teaching facilities by lowering a curtain system. The concourse that gives access to the seats during large events will also serve as running track.
When not used for academic instruction, this facility will easily convert into a 7,000 seat arena for large gatherings, such as commencement exercises, student-life functions, athletics and other campus and community events.
The University of West Georgia hopes to take ownership of the new building in early December 2008.
