We welcome your interest in our professional counseling programs at the University of West Georgia. We are vitally interested and committed to the training and education of counselors who will serve in schools and community agencies and organizations. The faculty in the Department of Counseling and Educational Psychology are dedicated to teaching and learning. The university’s motto is “educational excellence in a personal environment” and we accept that as part of our vision for the department. In addition to this supportive environment, we also expect to challenge our graduate students in every course and practicum/internship experience. Someone once said, “Ships in harbor are safe but that isn’t what ships are for”! Our faculty, then, want to get our students out into the “the open sea” where service, work, and the real world come together.
Ours is a department of faculty with academic degrees from universities across the United States and with varied clinical and consulting experiences to match. In the last couple of years, the faculty have published over 35 refereed articles in a variety of journals and have presented at over a 100 state, regional, national, and international conferences. They serve as leaders in organizations and agencies. The department is the recipient of the largest grant from a private source in the history of the university. We are one of six university counseling departments in the United States to receive funding from the Wallace-Reader’s Digest Fund to transform the work of school counselors --to help create the “cutting edge”. Our community counseling program is well known for innovation, as well. Over the past few years, we have changed our curriculum and programs several times in order to give our students the best experiences we can create. The master’s programs are accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). The faculty in the department value well conceived and strategic change.
The Counseling and Educational Psychology Department encourages applications from potential students who represent our multicultural and diverse society. Additionally, our coursework is designed to enhance multicultural awareness of students.
