One of the University of West Georgia's visionary goals (Visionary Goals: The "Three Fives") is innovation in professional preparation. Stated directly, this goal states that UWG will become a national model for innovations in professional preparation grounded in the scholarship of teaching and learning.

The faculty in the Department of Counseling and Educational Psychology have fully endorsed this university goal and realize that curricula and programs in the Department can impact the realization of this particular goal in a powerful way. Since a university wide planning and prioritization process (which occurred in 1994), the Department has focused goals and strategic plans which have lead to a national model for innovation in the professional preparation of counselors. (See Departmental Statement of Goals, Process to Assess These Goals, and Assessment Results)

While the department has achieved this goal (particularly in school counseling) in many respects, the faculty is committed to the continual pursuit of excellence in a personal environment nourished by challenge and support.
